Renovating in Ulmet, Germany

The house we are renovating is in Ulmet, Germany , a small, quiet village near Kusel and Altenglan. Located on Hintergasse Strasse, tucked in an alley, is our hidden gem of a home. Our community is small-approximately 700 folks and our neighbors are welcoming and friendly. Baumholder is about a 15 minute drive, the Glan River flows past us, and there are several hiking trails, seasonal storks that breed here, and the scenery is amazing.

It has been over a year since we looked at this old farmhouse for the first time; with its massive barns filled to the rim with fire wood (holz) that would have kept all seven woodburning stoves cooking for decades….you could have built another house with those piles of wood…then there were all those apfels and kartoffeln…The previous owners had green thumbs, fingers, and toes! The property is massive, in the shape of a U, so it has a courtyard…behind the barn is a kitchen garden, pretty good sized; the previous owners grew pumpkins, herbs, potatoes…I remember walking all around the entire outside of the compound as the previous owner explained everything; even in his worn slippers he was quick and sturdy on his eighty year old feet….

We are still renovating, taking our time and enjoying the process of painting the exterior, planning the garden, and pursuing other creative projects. While keeping within our budget, we installed an Ikea kitchen ourselves, put in laminate wood like flooring in the living room and dining area, and painted throughout. Next project is to build a small pergola in the garden with wood purchased locally from a mill in the town close by.
